untitled

It’s not easy to build a good face. Yes, yes…everybody is born with a face, at least in the sense of ‘face’ defined as the front of the head. But really, what young people have isn’t a face at all. It’s a face-in-waiting. It’s a face-larva. It’s in the process of becoming a face.

This is how you build a face: get born, piss away a couple dozen years larking about, get a life, then live it for a long time. The longer you live it, the better the face. It’s that simple.

A good face doesn’t necessarily mean a good person. There are some cranky old bastards out there–wretched, vile, bitter people–with perfectly wonderful faces. But that’s how it works. You don’t always get the face you deserve. You get the face you get.

Now this…this is a fine face. Full of character. Good lines that come from laughing and smiling, more than a trace of orneriness in it, but also a face with some seriousness built in. It might not be the face he wanted when he was young, but I hope he’s happy with it. If I were the sort to collect faces, this one would be on display.
