lift off!
Paul Pomeroy
I can think of lots of ways to spend a sunny spring day outdoors. I could take the dog for a run or find a nice patch of grass and read a book. I could go for a walk, an aimless walk, and end up buying an ice cream cone, just because. I could go for a drive through the country with the windows down, the radio up, and because I’m very Midwestern (and also related to farmers) I’d probably make mental notes about the state of the vast, rolling fields. There’s always the possibility of sitting on the porch with a glass of iced tea, listening to the whispering shuffle of last year’s leftover leaves being raked across the ground by the breeze. Maybe I’d stand barefoot on the lawn and feel the earth coming back to life right underneath my toes, or perhaps I’d poke around in my flower gardens, thinking about how soon those irises (they’re just tiny green shoots now) will be big, ridiculously beautiful flowers once again. Yeah, I can think of lots of ways to spend a sunny spring day outdoors, but I must admit it would never occur to me to grab a bunch of brightly-colored helium balloons and fly, and it’s too bad, because that seems like the best idea of all.
