white rooster watches the sun set

Look at him. Fierce as a Gascon and just as proud, watching the sun set. He knows the sun will return in a few hours, and it will return for just one reason: to hear him crow.

Like the famous Gascons of literature–D’Artagnan and Cyrano–all roosters are impetuous, unreasonable, a bit mad, and gallant to a fault. When a rooster discovers a tasty morsel it calls the hens to eat first. The chivalry of a rooster is widely recognized; the Talmud says we learn “modesty from the cat, honest labor from the ant, marital fidelity from the dove, and courtesy from the rooster.”

There is no false modesty in a rooster. If he is over-fond of hearing his own voice, who can blame him? The sun, after all, waits for the sound of his voice.
