Beauty is a simple passion,
but, oh my friends, in the end
you will dance the fire dance in iron shoes
.
Anne Sexton

Some people dance. Others stand apart and observe the dancing. The dancer’s perspective is limited to the dance itself, to the experience of movement, to the immediate joy and pleasure of the body and what it can do. The observer sees all the dancers, sees the interaction between them, sees patterns and motion and a more complex beauty.

What the dancer doesn’t see, what the observer doesn’t understand, is the observer is also engaged in the dance. A different sort of dance, a dance on the circumference, an orbiting dance. It may not be a simple passion, this observer’s dance, but it is passion all the same…and in the end we all wear the iron shoes and dance through fire.
