we are

There are lots of things to love about dogs. They’re good companions: loyal, smart (well, sometimes), funny. They’re always happy to see you. They believe that every problem in the world can be solved by spending some time playing a game of fetch, and if that doesn’t work, rolling around in things that smell bad ought to do the trick. Dogs: they’re swell. My favorite thing about dogs, at least for right now, is that they are living proof that there’s really nothing dignified at all about love. A dog doesn’t care if you call it “Hey pumpkinface monkeybutt” or if you wallow on the floor or if you snort when you laugh. A dog doesn’t care if you give it a big smooshy hug and mumble nonsense like “Mrrgrrmmmph” into the space between its shoulders. In fact, a dog will be happy with any or all of these offerings, and when it smiles, it will smile from head to tail, also not caring if its tongue hangs out of its mouth and it drools on your arm. Right now, that’s what I love about dogs — the fact that they are so overjoyed about how much they love you makes it impossible not to love them right back.
