Entrance

The world outside has turned the color of an old bruise—and it breaks my heart. The cool air holds the suggestion of rain to come. Not soon, but in the next few hours. It’s an evening for walking, an evening for holding hands and sharing softly concealed laughs, for whispers.

Inside, it’s warm and welcoming, full of fine contented folks—and that breaks my heart too. There is the clink of glasses and the bright sound of voices, there is laughter and conversation, the shared bubble and skirl of belonging.

Where do you go when you don’t belong outside and you don’t belong inside? You stay in the entrance.
