winnie's human

cat in early morning light

Morning, and the sky is quietly turning the color of a much-washed denim work shirt. Soon I’ll make waffles on the waffle-iron my momma was going to put in last year’s garage sale, but instead gave to me when I asked if it still worked. Neko Case speaks up from my iPod and assures me that if knew what she knew, I wouldn’t leave her—I wouldn’t turn away from her love. And she may be right…but she’s much too late in telling me.

A robin named Dexter lands on the clothesline in the back yard. When I was a boy my momma named all the robins Dexter. When the cat would catch one and, perfectly proud of herself, would drop a dead robin on the doorstep, momma would say “It’s okay…she didn’t get Dexter.” Neko Case finishes belaboring her point just as the waffler batter is ready.

Outside, the cat passes from darkness into a patch of morning light. Dexter flies away. Neko Case would be pleased.
