Down the street

It always starts so unexpectedly. Some thought drifts through your brain, and it could be any thought:

I need to pick up the dry cleaning.
I wonder if it’s time for a haircut.
That person was amazingly hot.
I should’ve brought a sweater.

Then your thoughts go somewhere else, and as you stare after them into some indeterminate point in space, your vision goes unfocused. Everything is a blur, and you’d notice if your mind weren’t somewhere else. And while you’re so busy thinking, your body goes on autopilot — you keep walking down the street or driving to your friend’s house for dinner or sitting at your desk with that spreadsheet you hate open on your computer — and even though you seem to have left for awhile, everything in the world just keeps on happening around you.

Whatever it takes to snap you back to life, you come back suddenly. Your brain jerks back into place and you blink a couple of times to help your vision clear. If anybody asks what you were thinking, you’d have absolutely no idea how to answer. What were you thinking? You have absolutely no idea.

I love when that happens.
