Summer comes, bright and bold, full of promises of long, hot days overflowing with lazy afternoons and trips to the park and trips to the beach and drinks on patios and cookouts and ball games and all those other fun things you dream about in mid-winter when going outside feels more like a punishment than a joy. Summer comes, with all its promises and its evenings of cicada hums and wild cricket jazz and firefly fairy lights flickering in the trees. Summer comes, and then it goes. It fades, and you can feel it disappearing with that first night that has a bite in the air, and you wish you’d brought a sweater. And soon enough, it will be fall, with its back-to-school and apples and show-off trees and pumpkins and magic and somewhere, always somewhere, the faint, sharp smell of burning leaves. And in that muddled space between, as the two seasons hash it out, fall comes closer into view and summer fades, it fades, disappearing into your daydreams to wait for another year.
