The Lady

The painting is Symphony in White, No. 1: The White Girl, by James Abbott McNeill Whistler. The woman in the painting is Joanna Hiffernan (or Heffernan, depending on your source), and she was, for a time, Whistler’s lover. Here, hanging in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., she’s framed by a doorway, she stands on that bearskin rug, that beautiful redhead in that painting looking out from all that white on white on white, beckoning you closer to come, look.
