There is so much to learn from a dog. For example, the critical importance of making room for another being…of having to scootch over in your chair so somebody who loves you can fit in beside you. Whether you want them to or not. The dog is a master instructor on how to accept sudden outbursts of ridiculous affection.
Another thing? A dog will teach you the difference between what’s important in life and what’s just bullshit. A dog will accidentally…or even intentionally…ruin your sweater and act like it doesn’t matter at all. And even if you’re upset over it, you know the dog is right. What’s a sweater compared to the eruption of joy a dog displays when you walk in the door after a prolonged absence (which, for a dog, is anything more than ten minutes)? You can replace sweaters; you can wear sweaters with holes in them. That unbridled affection is worth any number of sweaters. The sweater is just more bullshit.
You know what would make this a better world? I’ll tell you. It would be a better world if we learned to scootch over for everybody, if we learned to accept…and give…sudden outbursts of ridiculous affection, if we could be as happy to see a loved one return, if we could understand that sweaters aren’t as important as love. It would be a better world if we humans were actually as good as our dogs think we are.
