He stood against a wall, a pink bathroom wall, for a portrait. (There was wine involved… also tiaras, and did I mention tiaras?) He was at a family gathering, because family gatherings are times when you need wine and tiaras the most.

Family photos have a tendency of being so incredibly awkward, so uncomfortable and unflattering that many times, they end up being nearly impossible to like. But this is a family photo, and it is beautiful. It’s beautiful for many reasons, but one of the most immediately noticeable ones is that it captures something that so many family photos completely fail at: there is a love and a trust between the photographer and subject that can’t be faked, and it translates so perfectly.

This is a photo of a brother taken by a sister. This week, that brother, Chris Feinstein, passed away. He was a musician whose work was important to a lot of people, but more than that, he was someone’s family, and he was loved, and this photo, it’s proof. To his sister Tamelyn, and his niece Brittney, both of whom are members of our Utata family, our hearts go out to you in your time of loss, when goodbye came much too soon. We love you, and just like any family, we’re here for you (with wine and tiaras) if you should need us.
