The nine species of African parrots belonging to the genus Poicephalus are often described as playful, but sorta shy, with quiet voices (for parrots. I don’t know that there’s really a parrot that couldn’t bawk like a Mack truck horn if it really wanted to). They make excellent, loving pets, I hear. Their acrobatics are a delight to watch. They could have their heads scratched for hours. They’ll eat, as a treat, most anything you put in front of them: onion rings, toasty bread, a hunk of French Pyrenees cheese. And you want to know another thing? They’re terribly, terribly photogenic.
