They may not know each other from Adam, but they’re rivals as soon as they sit down across the board. Each begins with the same stronghold and the same army: one black, one white, each piece staring down its mirror-image combatant across the squares. Standing, they’re strangers, or neighbors, or friends, or lovers. Sitting, they’ve got a fight to win. It’s a fight that will bring them both smiles, perhaps, but a fight all the same.
