In Lisboa, they tell me, while mealtimes are lavish affairs full of rich soups, spiced meats and fish, and hearty stews, between-meal snacking is perhaps an even more serious sport. Hungry at 3pm? Walk into a pastelaria and pick up a pão-de-ló or leite-creme or barriga de freira. Hear the hint of a stomach growl an hour after that? Find a snack-bar kiosk and grab yourself a prego or bifana or a sandwich full of Queijo de Azeitão. And if a smiling face hands you your roll into the bargain, well. Who knows? You might have yourself a date for dinner, too.
