“Thou shalt know everything,” said the King’s daughter; “when thou descendest the mountains on which the castle stands, a wild bull will stand below by a spring, and thou must fight with it, and if thou has the luck to kill it, a fiery bird will spring out of it, which bears in its body a burning egg, and in the egg the crystal ball lies like a yolk.”
—from “The Crystal Ball,” the Brothers Grimm
This particular crystal ball, despite not having been dripped like a yolk from the egg of a fiery bird sprung out of the carcass of a wild bull, contains within it as much of the stuff of fairy tales as any magic orb; it holds the world, writ small, turned on its head, made captive, and twice as wondrous as before.
