Things don’t always turn out the way you expect them to.

That’s not exactly accurate. In fact, things almost never turn out the way you expect them to. That’s not entirely surprising. We make all our most important decisions based on incomplete and inadequate information. Should I buy this thing or that thing? Should I take that job? Should I marry that person? We try to make good decisions based on what we know, but in the end it’s often just a guess. Just a blind leap into an unknowable future. That’s not necessarily a bad thing. Knowing the exact outcome of every decision would make the world endlessly dull. That’s as true in life as it is in art.

There is something wonderful in the willingness to recognize the happy accident, the brilliant mistake.
