Are you happy?
If you asked Sam and Valerie that question, their response would likely be “What…you mean right now? This very moment?” Because let’s face it, there’s always something that needs to be done–laundry to be washed, leaves to be raked, children to be fed and bathed, dishes in the sink, shopping to be done. And housework–now there’s a generic term that covers a whole multitude of assaults on the spirit. Happy? Happy?
But in that long pause before actually answering, this comes to mind, and this. And those memories bring smiles and those smiles erase all those things that need to be done. Because that’s all they are–they’re just things that need to be done. And then the answer to the question is easy and obvious. Are you happy?
“You know what? Yeah, we really are. We really are.”
