If I saw something in my viewfinder that looked familiar to me, I would do something to shake it up. — Gary Winogrand
In this photograph of a woman hurrying along a city street, Louise has taken the familiar, and turned it into something we’ve not seen before, and will never see again. A woman, in a pair of Venetian red boots, is not merely walking; she is floating. She is not clothed in a coat of blue wool; she is borne aloft on a pair of wings. In her arms, folded just above her waist, we imagine a bundle of books or a cashmere gray kitten. In the blur of the moment, we heed the click of her heels on the pavement. And taste the lemony scent of verbena as she passes by.
The photographer looks through her viewfinder, and when she sees something familiar — to her — to all of us — she shakes it up and makes it her own.
