memories

I know I slept that summer, because I remember waking up in the morning, lying in bed on those cotton sheets worn so soft that I wanted to spend my life between them, but I’d always get up and make coffee, stand on the porch with a cup and look at what I could see. Then I’d head out to fill my day with whatever I felt like. Maybe ice cream, or reading a book in the sun, or eating ice cream while reading a book. Then maybe a nap in the grass. (I know I slept.) (Naps in the grass are always better in theory than in practice — oh, all those bug bites.) Sometime before twilight I’d go back, find something to eat, entertain myself one way or another until it was time to go to sleep. And I know I slept that summer, but I don’t ever remember going there, only lying on those cotton sheets and listening to the crickets, listening and listening until I woke up.
