Still Life with Laundry
john m flores

The tears of the world are a constant quality. For each one who
begins to weep, somewhere else another stops. The same is true of the
laugh
.
(Samuel Beckett — Waiting for Godot)

This is the way of the world. Sometimes you’re out in the sunshine, and everything is bluebirds and fluffy clouds. And sometimes you’re in the cellar, ducking spiders and doing chores. The sunshine and the cellar, like Beckett’s tears and laughter, are constant qualities. There’s always some fortunate soul out in the sun with the bluebirds; there’s always some sorry sumbitch stuck in the cellar with spiders and dirty laundry.

The trick is never to forget the sunshine when you’re in the cellar.
