C’est la vie

Any man, the saying goes, can lose his hat to a fairy wind.

But it takes a certain receptive spirit to welcome that wind, to embrace the unexpected as an occasion for discovery. You never learn anything from the expected result; the expected result only confirms and reinforces what you already believe. While there’s certainly a benefit in that, it’s like closing your eyes and dreaming of rain while it’s actually raining outside.

This may not be the image the photographer expected, but there’s a power to it all the same. Small fools rely on the happy accident; great fools discount them. Anyone can lose a hat to a fairy wind, but only the unimaginative will chase after it. For the creative person, the loss of a hat is the chance to enjoy the sun’s warmth or experience the feel of the rain.
