Brothers Karamazov

Father Gregorious had returned from a pilgrimage to Jerusalem, where he had solemnly celebrated the feast of St Nicholas. He had reached home at daybreak, to find a small crowd outside the kafeneio. Andros was waving a ripped shoe at him.

He nodded his head, with what he hoped passed as paternal wisdom, while his cousin Despina explained how this latest craziness had come to pass.

“A few days ago, well maybe two weeks, a small brown dog was abandoned outside the church door.”

“How do you know it was abandoned exactly there” he asked. He suspected she was embellishing her story with a little soap opera pathos.

“Well anyway, it was around that area, and we all saw it making mess under the Judas tree” she hedged. “So Feodora gave it to an animal lover friend of hers.” He nodded again, to show he was still paying attention. “Unfortunately it returned. At least we’d guessed it’d returned because of the boots.”

“Boots.”

“Shoes and boots started disappearing from people’s yards… including the Mukthar’s and Andros’ “

He sighed “So what do you want me to do about it. I am a man of God, not a dog catcher.”

She looked away, out of the window, at the palaver still going on outside the kafeneio. “Oh you don’t have to do anything. Andros got the dog and drove it somewhere in his van. I won’t tell you exactly where, but I imagine the people in Eptagonia will soon be hopping mad.”

He could tell she really wanted him to make him smile, he was not going to give her the satisfaction.
