street corner, calipatria

I’m going to paraphrase Susan Sontag here. A good photograph is an education of the heart. A good photo expands the viewer’s world and, at the same time, provokes the viewer to look inward. A good photograph communicates equally and directly with both the heart and the mind. A good photograph takes hold of the viewer’s eye and heart and brain and balls, and even if the grip eventually loosens, it never ever quite lets go.

I’ve looked at this photograph several times over the last few days. I’m taken in by the geometric formality of the composition, by the custard-thick darkness, by the light that’s as warm and nourishing as a bowl of soup, by the integration of hard lines with soft shapes. I find myself absurdly grateful to whoever constructed this building for not making it symmetrical, and to the city planner who had the stop sign placed where it is.

Mostly, I am grateful for Jody Miller, who time after time educates my heart.
