Night Vision

This is a good night.

Like those when, as children, we were allowed to stay up late. Remember journeys cuddled in the back seat of a family car, we’d watch the moon follow us home.

Now we sleep less, but the nights are longer, and petty with worries. Often I count the hours till morning, but not tonight, this one is a good night.

Tonight when the curtains are drawn they hold back the chill, the dark curls itself round us and soothes away the stress of the day. Tonight there’s a hot toddy, with whisky, lemon, heather honey and cloves, or perhaps we will drink sweetened chilli cocoa. It will comfort you like a familiar bedtime story.

The city is waiting outside, not soundless, but sighing like the orange cat that sleeps with always one eye slightly open. Clouds carpet the sky.

Tonight you may not remember your dreams, but know they might be beautiful.
