Pemaquid Point

there is a lighthouse at pemaquid point
on the coast of maine, built in 1835
after the original structure crumbled after
only eight years, built on a bedrock of
metamorphic and igneous stone formed more
than three hundred and fifty million years
ago when the heat and intense pressure
within the earth’s crust folded the stone
like saltwater taffy at the carnival.
soil lies over the stone,
grass grows in the soil,
a fence surrounds the lighthouse,
and the ocean surrounds everything
but the sunlight.
