antarctica [polaroid]

As a little girl she had heard about Antarctica and written a story imagining herself there. Twenty years later she lived there. She had a small room with bunk beds, and saw the same fifteen faces for ten months.

There was that big hole in the ozone layer so they had to wear factor 60 suncream whenever they ventured to the -28ºC outdoors. The smell reminded her of the beach.

Before she got there she was never afraid of the dark. Darkness was like a blanket of solitude. Then winter came. She was walking alone in the snow and felt there was someone following her. The fear bit to her core. She ran, blundering for the closest building, till she realised the attacker was only her trailing shadow.

She missed tomatoes.

Thank you to Miriam Iorwerth aka AntarcticM for writing to my little girl, all those years ago
