Out in the Middle of Nowhere

The middle of nowhere isn’t what it used to be.

Once it was that semi-pleasant place you passed through on your way to somewhere else. Now it’s not even that. Now it’s a dustscape, a deadweedscape, a lizardscape. It’s a wind-slapped slab, a home to rust, so hot and parched that even shadows evaporate. It smells of the dry husks of dead insects.

The middle of nowhere. Not even the roadkill is willing to stop there for long.
