Moraine Lake Canoe Shack
Ross Belot

Sometimes a smile is all it takes.

Yes, it’s her job to smile. It’s her job to be polite and cheerful and encouraging. It’s her job to make renting a canoe a pleasant experience for visitors the the Moraine Lake Lodge.

It’s a wee bit forced, that smile. She’s been on her feet all day, renting canoes. She’s been dealing with customers. She wasn’t expecting anybody would want to take her photograph. I mean, she’s just a girl who rents canoes. But if you ask to take her photograph, well then she’ll smile for the camera.

But look at this young woman’s face. Yes, it’s her job to smile and yes, her smile is a tad forced — but look closely at her face. She’s happy. She’s happy to be working with people, she’s happy to be young and healthy, she’s happy to be Canadian, she’s happy somebody wants to take her photograph even though she wasn’t prepared for it. She’s happy and that happiness shows in her smile.

And that makes me happy. A smile, that’s all it takes. Sometimes that’s all it takes.
