Over the lunch hour, the Buddha of Water Vapor offers aerosol wisdom to pilgrims at the stoplight and supplicants on the sidewalk. “In the sky, there is no distinction of east and west; people create distinctions out of their own minds and then believe them to be true.” The woman in the Lexus turns left on Bingham Road, where she has an appointment to show a house to a young married couple. The pedestrian in the porkpie hat stops to read the menu at Karlotta’s Kitchen.
“The way is not in the sky; the way is in the heart.” Three bedrooms, a wraparound porch, granite countertops and a Sub-Zero refrigerator, good schools nearby, furnace was replaced a couple years ago, the owner is willing to negotiate the price. The daily special is a grilled chicken sandwich with farmer’s cheese and sweet potato fries, thirty-three offerings in the all-you-can-eat salad bar, the soup of the day is a white chili made with turkey.
“When you realize how perfect everything is, you will tilt your head back and laugh at the sky.” The woman from the Lexus tells the young couple, it’s just a house; it won’t make you happy — but you can fill it with happiness if the happiness is in you. The pedestrian in the porkpie hat orders sweet potato fries to-go; he eats them on a bench in the park, sharing with the pigeons and sparrows.
