Live, Work, Create…Ride

Live. Work. Create. Yeah, it’s a logo. Yeah, it’s used to generate interest in merchandise. But you know what? It’s still a pretty good philosophy for getting on in the world.

Live. Be alive to the world around you — the beauty and the pain and the joy and the complexity and the wonder. Work. Most of us talk a good game about living a life of leisure, but the simple fact is almost everybody feels better when they’re doing something that contributes to the world. Work doesn’t have to be a job you don’t like, it can be volunteering at the local library or cooking a meal for friends or stuffing envelopes for the candidate of your choice or riding your bike to the market instead of driving the SUV. And create. Do something for your own soul. Creating doesn’t have to be about art — you can create a friendly atmosphere at work, you can sing show tunes in the shower, you can brew your own beer, you can experiment in the kitchen, you can concoct an alternative history (how would Pride and Prejudice be different if Jane Austen was an open lesbian?), you can practice calligraphy.

Live. Work. Create. It’s only a marketing ploy if you treat it like one.
