He takes a moment to try and answer her. In those few seconds his world view changes.

I am going to be a father, a dad, we are going to be parents, she’s pregnant, we’re going to have a baby. The words form sentences and swirl like a murmuration of starlings. His vision is suddenly misted. Everything peripheral is lost in a monochrome fog, people are reduced to silhouettes. Suddenly nothing seems certain, nothing makes sense. Is that a cat or a monkey? Is that a friend or a thug? He must be going blind. What a cruel, ridiculous insanity that in the very moment he finds out he’s going to become a father he starts to lose his eyesight. Maybe he’ll never even be able to see their baby.

She lifts her scarf and wipes the sudden tears from his face. Suddenly everything becomes clear again.
