step through

The photographer stood here for a moment, but the opening stands here for months.

Once there was noise and clamouring as it, and other sculptures, were unloaded and winched into place. Once there were crowds and festivals. Now there is only the conversation between this frame and the faraway mountains. The photographer saw past the hard vertical lines of the portal and looked into the landscape. Silver lake, distant green, constant snow, the flight of a bird and the delicate sound of its wingbeat. The opening has stood for months, weather scarred, warm to touch in summer, glued with ice in winter.

In the moment the bird and photographer share, they are both happy, in their own ways. The photographer has stacked books to build a picture, and like the bird, feels the current of wind skirting the edge of the lake. The sculpture will stand through winter storms, photographers with books and birds will come and go, the mountains and the lake will still be framed.
