Christmas card

There was snow on the ground so we sat close together. She gave us a wrap, red as river of cranberry — it wasn’t much but it took the chill off the cold air. She gave us hats, mine was too big for my head so she wound a scarf around my head. Then my little sister wanted one.

There were crows circling above us. The cold bit into my legs, patches of snow melted around us. She asked us to smile.

I whispered to my sis, “Pretend to smile,” I told her. She knew exactly what I meant. We gave the sweetest smiles, the most fleeting smiles we’d ever fleeted. We jumped up, ran all the way home, the red wrap a cloak trailing out behind us. I tipped my hat at strangers. We laughed and laughed.

When the print arrived, there were tears in Mama’s eyes. “You two look so grown up,” she said and hugged us tight against her.

Now every Christmas I dig that photo out and stare into that little girl’s eyes and wonder how I got to be so grown up.
