Fruitcake, shortly to be eaten by a roomful of army cadets
Lú_
To make the perfect fruitcake you’ll need flour and eggs, butter, sugar and a healthy splash of milk. And you’ll need fruit.
Choose it well — throw in some plump glacé cherries to remind us all of Santa Claus. Shake in some raisins while we put more coal on the fire. Stir in some candied peel while we mull some wine with spice and oranges — I’ll hand you a mugful laced with amaretto to warm away your winter cares. And while me and my man steal a kiss under the mistletoe, you’ll finish off your mixture with a scattering of angelica.
Stir, bake and when it’s done, sprinkle with icing sugar that falls from your sieve like midwinter snow.
Slice and stand back to admire your work, and smile because you know that not one crumb of that Christmas fruitcake will go to waste as a hungry army advances to devour it.
