Happy Easter
Sam Turner

You want to have your cake and eat it. Well maybe you don’t, but I sure as hell do. I’m not sure I understood that saying when I was a kid. I was a skinny runt, a picky eater, but it seemed to me like any fool would want cake, and yet more cake, with bonus, extra, top up cake.

This is very much like that cake I wanted. It is in fact, a very British cake, a cake that takes me back decades and over an ocean, and through all those cakes I baked in a score of different kitchens. First of all there’s a wall of chocolate fingers. Let me explain about chocolate fingers, the lovely sweet crunch of biscuit (British style biscuit), all covered in chocolate. Then there’s chocolate eggs, in a chocolate Corn Flakes nest. I know from experience that a bunch of American’s reading this are thinking “really chocolate corn flakes… weird” but seriously you guys brought the world Rice Crispies doused in marshmallow goo, so the least you can do is keep an open mind. Try cornflakes covered in a mixture of golden syrup (not corn syrup, bleugh) and chocolate, because it’s silly, and messy, and somewhat delicious.

So when I saw this picture of this cake I laughed, because there are so many excellent reasons to take photographs, so many reasons to document life and the world around us, to make art, or to keep memories, to record injustice or to commemorate the best and the most wonderful, but Sam took this picture so he could both have his cake and eat it. Sweet.
