Four hundred and fifty six minutes after she eventually arrived in the city the young woman felt like her brain might congeal. Gasping humidity, jet-lag and confusion were all buzzing for prime position, yet she was happy.

Noise was constant and enveloping, people, traffic, life. Every rooftop was an urban timpani that had vibrated from the moment of construction, every pipe and gutter repeated the inescapable city song. Her ears buzzed, hooting, shouting, yelping sounds, a human zoo, yet she was happy.

Exhaustion and exhilaration led them to a high place, a famous view, a beauty spot. “You look happy, insane,  like you could jump for joy” he said. So she did.
