diana in the morning (iii)

Diana, as pale as blossoms, is lying in the street. The narrow road is momentarily blocked by a truck as she pillows her head on her arm. She closes her eyes to the glare of the morning, and you think about that movie “Run Lola Run” and Lola boldly refusing death as she lies bleeding in the sunlight.

Diana in Doctor Martin’s, closes her mind to the city. In these few moments she drifts down ancient lines to the forests that once were here. She can trace music in the leafless trees along the pavement, she can hear sibilant birdsong. She doesn’t worry about the urban dirt in her hair, doesn’t care what this looks like to passersby, they will keep on passing by.

Many years from now she might see this picture and smile. She’ll remember that t shirt, she’ll  think how the first day she wore those boots they rubbed her ankles raw. Whatever else happens, she will always be that girl who wore Docs with long socks, pale Diana, forest moonlight on a sunny city street.
