Mongolian Self Portrait

This was probably not what mother meant when she told you to “Go off and see the world.” Just as in the story of the three little pigs, mothers hope you’ll be sensible,  practical, and build a strong suburban house made of bricks. Mothers can only hope.

From our comfortable couches we feel that there are no secrets left in the world. The TV crews have climbed every gnarly mountain, they have shown us the sinewy lushness of jungles, and the ice lashed antarctic. We need not bother exploring, it has all already been discovered.

But look at this; a self portrait in borrowed, traditional clothes in Dornod, Mongolia, the clouds decorate the massive sky in celebration. It’s a picture that shouts out, “We got of the couch and we found this for ourselves.” Not all the best houses are built of bricks.
