Marking Time

Know the true value of time; snatch, seize, and enjoy every moment of it. No idleness, no laziness, no procrastination: never put off till tomorrow what you can do today.
— Philip Stanhope, 4th Earl of Chesterfield

Yeah. Words of wisdom from the 4th Earl of Chesterfield, whose greatest accomplishment in life was to be the firstborn son of the 3rd Earl of Chesterfield. His second greatest accomplishment? The design of the Chesterfield sofa — a quilted leather couch where he could park his pampered privileged arse.

No idleness? Nonsense. Idleness is a gift. Unoccupied time is the parent of creativity. Without idleness, there’d be no art, no philosophy, no literature, no scientific theory. To sit and do nothing but think and observe — it’s like removing the anchor from a boat. The boat drifts, without any specific direction, without any particular destination. Sometimes it ends up somewhere interesting.

That’s the true value of time, The 4th Earl had that part right. Snatch idleness when you can. Enjoy every moment of it.
