Liska im Garten

Life is full of firsts. First word, first step, fist tooth, first day at school. Fast forward to first kisses, the sloppy, tooth clashing, clinches that dash romantic dreams on the rocks. There’s the first date, a battlefield of dreadful conversations and awkward manners. Memories of your first love, which will touch a bittersweet nerve every time you hear Abba/ Nirvana/Dumpy’s Rusty Nuts on the radio. A first home which is all too often bought in desperation and patched together with hard learned lessons. A firstborn child to teach you the meaning of love and sleeplessness.

I think we all know how it feels the first time you take a picture with a new, an old-new, an unfamiliar camera. There’s excitement and trepidation, will it be sloppy like the middle school kisses, will it return to haunt you like an old Spandau Ballet song, will it feel clumsy in your fingers, will there be no chemistry between you and your camera?

I like the result of Martin’s first date with his GOMZ Fotokor. I love that he breaks it down into so many firsts with one image. His first large format picture, first 9×12. his first attempt at dry plate and his first DIY development. Martin and GOMZ seem like a nice couple. I’m sure they’ll be happy together, I hope that this one is the first of many wonderful photographs in their partnership.
