Signs of Life

There’s nothing quite like this moment in early spring, the first time you see curvy little shoots muscling their way through an angular mass of dried stalks. They reach for heat and light, just as we do. Something in them wants to be found.

In my neck of the woods, winter is over at last, and we’re all still recovering. Our gardens and woods are bursting with growth; we’re settling into the sustained warmth at last. But it wasn’t so very long ago that I set out to hunt for this very sight, and listened to my own boots crunching on last year’s fallen stems. I feel a kinship with the photographer, who’s enjoying springtime in the far north and shared this wonderful image with us.

If you look ahead from a moment like this, you can see an awakening, even if you still feel the cold at your back. Before long you’ll see blossoms and bees. You’ll hear the beating of wings, and you’ll notice little things crawling in the shadows. This is Spring, every bit as mysterious as it is ordinary. It has things to do, whether we see ’em or not, and oh, is it ever stubborn. We couldn’t stop it if we tried.

So take heart, weary traveler, and keep on.
This is another beginning.
