Seal Beach Pigeon

What, you think it’s easy being a pigeon? Let me tell you, it’s not easy. For centuries…millenia, even…you people have been oppressing us. Oh, you like us well enough when you want something, when we’re useful to you. When Noah, after that flood business, wanted to find out if the waters were receding, did he send out an eagle to look for land? Did he send out an egret or an owl? No, he sent a pigeon. And we returned with an olive branch. When Mohammed was hunkered down in the cave of Thaw’r, hiding from his enemies, who distracted them and saved the Prophet? A hawk? A flamingo? Nope. Pigeon, baby. A flock of pigeons.

What did we get in return for helping out all your holy people? Nothing. Worse than nothing. When Jesus was born, what did his parents sacrifice at the temple? Any guesses? That’s right, a pigeon. Yeah, sure, they called the sacrifice a ‘dove’ to pretty it up, but it ended up just as dead. Hell, we were the only bird they’d even allow as a sacrifice. Weren’t no finches or larks getting their necks wrung. It was all pigeons all the time.

You can call us ‘rats with wings’. It don’t matter. Ain’t no rat as pretty as we are. But rats are here and so are we. Can’t go noplace in the world without seeing rats and pigeons. In spite of everything, here we are. And dude, we ain’t leaving.
