untitled

This whole world’s wild at heart and weird on top.”
Lula (Wild at Heart, 1990)

I’m a simple guy. I don’t expect much from the world. I don’t have to expect much, because the world just keeps dishing stuff up. All you have to do is just go out the door. Go out the door and wander around, and at some point the world will send you something you’ve never ever seen before — and aren’t likely to ever see again.

Maybe that’s the whole purpose of life. To go out the door and see stuff you’ve never seen before. To recognize the novelty that’s out there just waiting to be found every single day. To take joy in it. I mean, look — here’s half a watermelon sitting on a raggedy-ass old swivel chair on a manhole cover. How can that not make you happy?

How’d that happen? I don’t know. Did the photographer just come upon it? Or did he deliberately put half a watermelon on the raggedy-ass swivel chair and then park it in the street for a photo? I don’t know. I don’t even know which of those would be more wonderful — that he happened upon it, or that he thought “Hey, you know what would be cool? Half a watermelon on a raggedy-ass swivel chair.” Either way, there it is.

All I really know is Lula was right. This whole world? Wild at heart and weird on top. And ain’t it great.
