Sun set of a happy day

Everyone wants their wedding to be the best day of their lives. They want sunshine and a warm breeze. A perfect ceremony with no forgetting of the rings or fluffing of the vows. Perfect flowers in the bouquet and on the tables laid out for the reception. Everyone wants guests who truly share the happiness of bride and groom. Guests who sing with gusto, in tune and on time when required. Whether that’s during the ceremony of at the celebration afterwards when they dance with crazy feet to old songs that everyone forgot they ever knew.

But sometimes the flowers wilt before the ceremony even begins. Sometimes the groom is almost sick with fear. Not that he has any doubts – but this is the one moment in their lives that he simply has to get right. Because they will remember this day to the end of their days. And now you mention it, where did he put those wedding rings?

And she frets, waiting for the moment that he will see her in her wedding dress.  The one that she took 12 months to choose because she wanted it to be perfect. She knows he’ll love it because he loves her, but she wants to be the absolute best he has ever seen her. But she can’t think about it now because it will make her cry. And will she remember what to say and when she throws her bouquet where will it land?  Not in the hands of the girlfriend with the boyfriend who turned down the leap year proposal…

And before they know it’s happening. He smiles so wide he might explode when he sees her. And then one of her sister’s children begins to yell and cry just as they are about to pledge their love. And when he takes her hand he can’t get the ring on – twisting and pushing until he thinks it will never go but then it slips over her knuckle like it was always meant to be.

And later, though the soup is too cold and the dessert too warm, the guests smile and laugh and take to the dance floor where they dance sing with gusto. There is air guitar and waltzing. There are children pirouetting. There are grandparents toe-tapping along. It continues until the bar runs dry.

And later when they go back through the photos they see this one and both agree it’s the crowning glory, the icing on the wedding cake, the silhouetted joy of a sunset on the happiest day.
