Key West Morning Walk

Dey say de worl’ was once all wata jus’ ’bout. All ’round, all same, jus’ wata ‘cept for little bit here and dere. Bit o’ sand, bit o’ dirt. all rest be wata.

Den de gods, dey send down dis roosta. He root ‘n dig, he peck ‘n scratch in de sand, kick de dirt, makin’ mess. He go KU ku ku KU! KU ku ku KU!, and alla time makin’ mess. He spread de dirt ’round, spread de sand. Dat roosta, he peck and fuss and he shape dis worl’. All by hisself, he shape it. He fin’ a palm seed inna dirt and he kick it inna wata, where it grow and make a tree. He go KU ku ku KU! and he make de sky. Make all de sky, and everthing in it, dat roosta.

You see him dere, de way he walk? All roosta, dey walk dat way, you watch. Like dey make de worl’. Now you know why.
