insomnia = madness

“Sometimes, when one is moving silently through such an utterly desolate landscape, an overwhelming hallucination can make one feel that oneself, as an individual human being, is slowly being unraveled. The surrounding space is so vast that it becomes increasingly difficult to keep a balanced grip on one’s own being…”
   — Haruki Murakami, The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle

Tonight I invite you not only to reflect on this haunting image, but also to linger awhile in Stefano Ricci’s photostream and consider the other work in his Insomnia series.

At first I was caught by the strangeness of his landscapes, the jagged rush of his city scenes. When I began to review the series as a contiguous whole, though, I was startled by how unsettling it was, how compelling a portrait it suggests. There is temptation in the shadows, the repetition; there is an odd sort of mercy in the cruel light, as if from an unwelcome morning.

We’ve all been there, have we not?
