Black Cat

A cat is always at home.

This cat, for example, sitting on the stoop like he owns the stoop, sitting in front of a home as if he owns the home. Take this Welsh cat and drop him…well, anywhere. Istanbul, for example. Drop him in Istanbul and he’ll own Istanbul. He won’t mind (or won’t mind terribly) that other beings use his Istanbul. He’ll barely acknowledge their existence.

There is a saying among Buddhists: Behind a cat, the whole world comes in. There’s a story that underlies the saying. It’s too long to repeat here, but let’s just say it’s not entirely flattering to cats. But Buddhists are pragmatic enough to know the key term in the saying is behind.

A cat is always at home, and always enters first.
