By the sea

Fifty years ago we woke with the blackbirds and the grey gulls, before dawn, and went to see the world.

The cat slipped between your legs as you opened the screen door. We; the cat, the birds, you and I,  we were the only ones. There was dew on the grass, and the light was still too faint for colours.

So we padded on, and on the way the cat dismissed us until we found ourselves at our favourite beach. The sand slapped coldly under our toes. We found pebbles that gleamed like pearls at the edge of the surf. I watched as your long fair hair blew and flapped like a sail, I knew I would always remember how the first light made it shine. Then after sunrise we went home.
