Cats don’t know how to meditate. Nor do fish know how to swim. It’s not a thing they have to learn; it’s just a thing they do. There is absolutely no transition between a cat at play and a cat in meditation. It just happens. A cat requires no instruction, no explanation, no conscious decision-making, no preparation, and no special clothing.

A cat will, however, take advantage of a zafu if one is handy. Fish won’t even do that.
